Volume is length times width times depth, converted to cubic yards and increased by your waste percentage. Weight is that volume times the material density in US tons per cubic yard, with 1.4 as the default.

Tips for better results

Gravel density varies by stone type and moisture, so ask your supplier for its tons per cubic yard. Add extra if the base is soft, since material compacts after spreading.

Measure twice, order once, and check quantities with your supplier.

Frequently asked questions

How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel?

Typically about 1.3 to 1.5 US tons, so the calculator defaults to 1.4. Crushed stone and river rock differ, so use your supplier's figure.

Does the result account for compaction?

Only through the waste allowance. Increase it for compacted driveway bases, since loose gravel settles after rolling.

Is the gravel calculator free?
