Free Payback Period Calculator
Calculate how many years an investment takes to earn back its cost.
Year 1 cash flow grows by your yearly growth percentage and is added up until the total reaches the initial investment, with a fraction of the final year interpolated. The discounted version first discounts each year's cash at your discount rate, so it takes longer.
How to use the Payback Period Calculator
- Enter your starting amount, regular contribution, expected return and time period.
- Read the end value and the split between money you put in and growth.
- Try a lower return as well as a higher one, because real markets are uneven.

Tips for better results
Payback shows risk and liquidity but ignores cash flows after recovery, so do not use it alone. Prefer the discounted figure if money tied up for years matters.
Treat the result as an illustration, not a promise. Returns vary year to year.
Fees and inflation reduce real growth, so consider both when planning.
Privacy and where your data goes

Frequently asked questions
What is the discounted payback period?
It is the time to recover the investment using the present value of each cash flow. It is always at least as long as simple payback.
Why does it say not within 50 years?
With the inputs given, cumulative cash flow never covers the investment in the 50-year limit. Lower the cost or raise the cash flow or growth.
Is the payback period calculator free?
Yes. It is free to use with no signup, no watermark and no usage limits.
Is my data private?
Yes. Your inputs are processed in your browser and saved only in its local storage. They are not uploaded to our servers.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes. Zapxa works on phones, tablets and desktops. Use the print button or download a PDF to keep a copy.
